Frequently Used Tools:

Accounts

The ECE department maintains its own user accounts independent of OIT’s systems. Your ECE username will likely be the same as your UT Netid, but the accounts are not otherwise related.

Basic Setup

Each account comes with one gigabyte of disk space for class use. When you are using a Linux system, this is mounted as your home area. When using Windows, it is mounted as the S: drive visible from My Computer.

If for some reason your S: drive becomes disconnected, you can reconnect it by doing the following:

  1. Click Start then click My Computer.
  2. Select Tools from the menu. Then click Map Network Drive.
  3. For drive select S:.
  4. For folder type \\student.ece.utk.edu\username where username is your ECE username.
  5. Select Reconnect at logon.
  6. Click Finish

E-mail

Your e-mail addresses will be username@ece.utk.edu and username@alumni.ece.utk.edu.

Use the following settings in your e-mail client:

Incoming Mail Server Outgoing Mail Server
imap.ece.utk.edu smtp.ece.utk.edu

Enable SSL for the imap connection, and TLS for the outgoing SMTP.
You will have to supply your ECE departmental username and password.

You can also access your mail via webmail at https://webmail.utk.edu.
Select UTK-ECE-Student:ssl from the Server dropdown.

As of June 2008 - ECE to EECS Mail Migration Status
As an ongoing effort to streamline our department mail service, we will
be migrating each mail user to the new EECS mail server. This process will
begin with the IT Staff, after which Faculty migration will be completed, and finally students will be migrated en masse. Following is a rough timeline:

May - Mail migration of Ferris IT Staff begins.
June - Migration of IT Staff concludes. Mail Migration of Faculty begins.

Migrated users can use the following webmail link: https://webmail.eecs.utk.edu.
For more information, Please visit http://www.eecs.utk.edu/mail

Web Space

Each student is issued a personal webspace that can be viewed by the general public. You may use this space to post your personal homepage, online resumes etc. This can be viewed at:
http://www.ece.utk.edu/~username
where username is your ECE username.

To make files accessible via the web, you should put it in the directory called webhome. In linux, this is in your home area. From a Windows lab, this is located in your s: drive.

Printing

Printing from the labs should be setup to work automatically. Currently the labs have black and white laser printers.

Passwords

Your password in the ECE department is independent of your netid.
To change your Windows password, press Control-Alt-Delete and select Change Password.
To change your Linux password, type yppasswd on the command line.

If you are unable to access your account, you can have your password reset by visiting ECE-IT Support in Ferris Hall room 417. You will need to have your student ID or another form of picture identification.
